Kill your darlings

Letting go and cutting back as an artist is not always easy, but it is important to reach the audience.

There's this one magical moment.

A dance sequence that enchants me.

I love every movement in it.

Every detail.

Every second.

But the spark doesn't seem to spread to others, or it falls off faster than expected.

‘Kill your darlings’, they say.

Scratch what's close to your heart.

I've worked on it a lot, and now I'm just supposed to throw it away?

As an artist, I struggle every day: between what I love, what triggers something in me, and what touches others.

Between my vision and the reality of the audience.

Sometimes I have to let go.

Cancelling the most beautiful sentences.

Sacrifice my favourite movements.

Because in the end, only one thing counts:

that my art should reach people, touch them.
