Many people believe that a career in dance is not possible. Is that really true?
Well, it's true that a job in the arts doesn't necessarily guarantee stability, security and high wages. But what job can do that today? (Perhaps in the trades.)
The rapid changes in the cultural scene and the turnover rate of trends and ‘one-hit wonders’ can be a real challenge for artists. It's not always easy to persevere, establish yourself and celebrate success.dance is also a physically demanding art form that involves a lot of wear and tear.
However, it is precisely this discipline, perseverance, resilience and stamina, which are important for this profession, that help dancers to stay strong, even when things aren't going so well. They learn to deal with change and adapt in order to develop further.
Whether they work as a teacher, training leader, coach, choreographer or in stagecraft, they remain true to their passion and continue to develop. Be it in set design, stage technology, dramaturgy or management. The intensive and daily confrontation with areas such as physical, psychological and social issues opens up many opportunities for almost all dancers. Many of them switch to other professions, e.g. physiotherapy, forms of therapy in general, social work, other creative forms, etc.
I often experience an incredible openness to new things and am always surprised at how many ex-dancers completely reorganise their lives and do so successfully.
Dance is an incredible school of life that strengthens our character and paves the way for many ideas.
Career: Yes, of course!
Success: Depends on your perspective.
Breadless: Definitely not.
